Combustion Turbine Services
Simple Cycle
Black & Veatch has long been considered a leader in combustion turbine projects
as exemplified by Black & Veatch’s extensive simple cycle project experience.
Black & Veatch has been involved in over 125 simple cycle projects totaling
over 29,000 MW.
These projects utilized both aeroderivative and large frame combustion turbines,
and were executed under various contract approaches, from engineering-only to lump-sum
turnkey EPC. This varied experience and capability gives Black & Veatch’s clients
the flexibility to choose the equipment and project approach that best suits their
requirements.
Combined Cycle
Utilities, independent power producers, and governmental authorities continue to
look for cleaner and more efficient methods to generate electricity, and combined
cycle combustion turbine power plants are one answer.
Black & Veatch is the industry leader in combined cycle power plant projects.
Black & Veatch has been involved in the design and construction of over 130
combined cycle projects totaling over 55,000 MW. Configurations for these projects
range from 1 x 1 to 6 x 2, and were executed under contract approaches ranging from
owner’s engineer to lump-sum turnkey EPC. These projects utilized combustion turbines
from every major manufacturer, both aeroderivative and large frame combustion turbines,
and the latest combustion turbine technology, including “FB” and “G” class machines.
This depth and breadth of experience allows clients to count on Black & Veatch
to deliver the most efficient, reliable, and maintainable combined cycle facility
on schedule and on budget.
Cogeneration
Cogeneration facilities bring a higher level of complexity to project success –
efficient steam delivery to the steam host; multiple tie-ins to existing facilities;
minimization of interruptions to existing facility operations. Black & Veatch’s
wealth of cogeneration experience and project management excellence is vital to
successfully execute these complex projects.
Black & Veatch has executed over 35 cogeneration projects totaling over 7,800
MW. These projects included both “greenfield” facilities and additions to existing
process facilities. Black & Veatch has successfully integrated cogeneration
facilities to existing facilities utilizing work windows for multiple steam system
tie-ins to minimize existing facility downtime and maximize value creation for the
client.
Combined Cycle Conversion
Rising fuel prices and growing electricity demand require power producers to generate
electricity in the most efficient manner. This sometimes requires converting simple
cycle facilities into more efficient combined cycle operations.
Black & Veatch has executed the design and construction of several combined
cycle conversions including a conversion to a 2 x 1 configuration in California
involving “F” class turbines and a conversion to a 3 x 1 configuration in Malaysia
involving “E” class turbines.
Clients look to Black & Veatch’s cycle optimization expertise, combined cycle
project experience and project management skills to create greater value by improving
existing plant efficiencies through combined cycle conversions.
Repowering
Aging power plants often experience lower efficiencies and reliability, and higher
operating and maintenance costs. This is due in part to degradation or changes in
the economics of different fuels, but also in inefficiencies of the original power
generation technology.
Repowering aging steam power plants with combustion turbines and heat recovery steam
generators is an economical means for extending the life of a power generation facility.
In the past 10 years, Black & Veatch has provided engineering, procurement,
and/or construction services for combustion turbine repowering projects totaling
over 6,400 MW of generating capacity. The methods of repowering utilized in these
projects include:
- Steam Augmentation From the Heat Recovery Steam Generator to an Existing Steam Turbine
Generator
- Replacement of Existing Steam Generators with Combustion Turbine Generators and
Heat Recovery Steam Generators for Increased Power Production and Better Plant Heat
Rate Utilizing the Existing Steam Turbine Generators
Black & Veatch has the experience and project management skills to convert almost
any existing power plant into a cleaner, more efficient power generation facility
through combustion turbine repowering and create greater value for the client through
lower operating and maintenance costs.
Hybrid Desalination
Black & Veatch is the only international design firm top-ranked in both power
generation and water treatment design. Black & Veatch has leveraged this expertise
to develop an innovative, patents pending hybrid power and desalination plant utilizing
both thermal and membrane desalination methods. This hybrid power and desalination
plant gives the operator the ability to utilize the most cost effective method of
desalination given the demand for power generated by the plant.
Industrial
Black & Veatch’s extensive power generation experience can also be put to use
for industrial power applications. Black & Veatch has executed numerous industrial
power projects involving various power generation and steam supply sources including:
- Combustion Turbines
- Reciprocating Engines
- Package or Heat Recovery Boilers
- Steam Turbines
- Micro Turbines
- Gasification of Renewable Fuel Sources For Use in Turbines
